In this highly interactive, multi-sensory Bible lesson on Moses and the plagues of Egypt, your older elementary or middle school students will engage with each of the first nine plagues by participating in related physical challenges.
Students will toss aluminum foil "flies” on a flyswatter, wear red stickers to represent the plague of boils and much more! This hands-on approach helps students remember the names and order of the plagues, making the lesson both educational and fun. Perfect for students in grades 4-8, this extensive 8-10 hour curriculum unit provides an in-depth examination of the first nine plagues of Egypt as described in Exodus 4-10.
Note: The tenth and final plague is covered in the lesson "10th Plague of Egypt | Passover Curriculum", available for purchase separately here.
⏰️ Timing: Written specifically for older students in grades 4-8, this DOUBLE UNIT allows you 8-10 hours of teaching time providing a thorough exploration of this key biblical narrative.
✴️ LESSON PART A: Moses is Sent (Back) to Egypt
God gave Moses four task to complete upon his arrival to Egypt. Students search these out as described in Exodus 3 by completing the colorful worksheet "God's Task List". We are also told what Moses brought with him on his journey. Included in the curriculum are twelve full color items for you to print out and place on the floor. Students line up and have only ten seconds to choose four pictures with play continuing until a student has chosen the four correct picture combination.
✴️ LESSON PART B: I AM the Lord
Using the Brick Wall worksheet included in the curriculum, students are assigned a name (Pharaoh, Moses or Foremen) and a verse from Exodus 5 in which there is a direct quote. Students write the direct quote, one word per brick, on their wall. The teacher reads the narration portions of the chapter while students provide their quoted text.
✴️ LESSON PART C: Color Coding the Plagues and Physical Challenges
In this highly interactive section, each of the nine plagues are taught separately, but there is a definite rhythm to each one. After each passage is read, you will share some relevant facts about each plague as described in the lesson plan. Then with your assistance, students will color code the passage, searching for repeated phrases, meaningful actions and noteworthy events. Then finally you will engage students in a related physical challenge to help ensure that each plague is memorable. For example, your students will remember plague #4 is flies as they toss aluminum foil "flies" up in the air and catch them on a flyswatter. Plague #6 (boils) becomes memorable when red sticker dots are placed on classmates' faces. In this way, students will learn the names, order and magnitude of the first nine plagues.
✴️ LESSON PART D: ✝️ What Have I Learned About Jesus Today?
The lesson concludes with the understanding that Moses as the "sent one" who rescued the Israelites from slavery and guided them to the land of promise was a mere shadow of a greater reality. This story allows us to explore the parallels between Moses' mission and the redemptive nature of Jesus Christ who was also sent by God to free us from a life of slavery ~ our slavery to sin. Just like Moses, Jesus was rejected by His own people but lived His live in faithful obedience in order to provide us with salvation and deliverance from spiritual bondage, guiding us to our own Promised Land - Heaven!

FAQS:
What Christian perspective is used for these Bible lessons?
I am an evangelical Christian who writes Bible curriculum for older students, and I take this tremendous responsibility seriously. Each lesson has a clear focus on what God says in His Word and the lessons are presented age appropriately, thoughtfully and biblically.
What translation of the Bible is used? 99% of the time I use the ESV although on rare occasion I might use another translation such as the NIV.
How can this Bible lesson be used?
Each lesson unit in our Walking Alongside Jesus series is divided into five sections, each section takes between 30 minutes to an hour. This allows homeschool and Christian school teachers to use it daily in the classroom (thereby completing an entire unit in a week) OR in a Sunday School classroom or youth group once a week (thereby completing an entire unit in a month). These lessons are flexible enough to be used in the following settings:
Children's Sunday School class
Youth Group
Private Christian school Bible class
Chapel for Christian schools
Children's Church
Homeschool Bible class
Family Bible time
