Your students will explore the Israelites journey from Egypt to Mount Sinai in this in-depth Bible lesson based on Exodus 15-17. This resource highlights key events, including God's miraculous provision of manna from heaven and water from a rock, showcasing God's faithfulness and care for His people.
✍️ Older elementary and middle school students will come to understand the spiritual significance of Moses striking the rock and learn the importance of trust and obedience. With interactive activities, hands-on reenactments, colorful worksheets, and engaging lessons, this study is designed for 5th to 8th graders. By the end of the lesson, students will gain a deeper understanding of God's faithful provision and the overarching message of Jesus's sacrifice as the "Rock" who was struck for our sins. Perfect for enriching your biblical education curriculum and inspiring young learners in their faith journey.
✴️ LESSON PART A ~ BITTER WATER: A HARD CUP TO SWALLOW and MAP SKILLS
Through the use of a creative math skills worksheet, students discover how many train cars of food and water it would take to feed the traveling Israelites every day in the desert, proving that only God and God alone was their Provider. And yet, the people complained - boy did they complain! We provide you with a Grumble Meter with numbers from 0-6 on which students make their guess as to how many times the Israelites grumbled about food or water on their three month journey to Mount Sinai. Through the use of a "trick" that turns "bitter" water (for which the Israelites "bitterly" complained) into fresh water, students come to understand that God greatness was on full display in this miracle. On the map worksheet "Journey to Sinai" students trace the Israelites route from Egypt to Mount Sinai. Throughout the lesson they draw small reminder pictures of what happened at each critical location.
✴️ LESSON PART B ~ WHAT IS IT? [MANNA]
Students gather around a sheet of potato flakes and wonder "What is it?" ~ to which the answer is "Exactly!" The Israelites complained about a severe lack of food (that would be #2 on the Grumble Meter!) and God delivered in the form of bread falling from heaven ~ something they had never experienced before (or since). They called it "manna" which literally means "what is it?" Using the worksheet, "Doodle Notes" students learn the equivalent of an "omer" in cups, quarts and gallon(s) and are challenged to pick up an omer of "manna" from the sheet in less than 30 seconds. Students also learn that the people were required to pick up ONLY an omer of manna per day or maggots would rot the remainder unless the next day was Sabbath, in which case they could pick up two omer and the manna would remain fresh.
✴️ LESSON PART C ~ WATER FROM THE ROCK
At the centerpiece of this lesson section is a rock - which can be as simple as a rock you bring from your own yard to one that you make with tubing and a foot bellows for water squirting action (our YouTube channel instructional video link is included in the lesson) ~ which will definitely garner some attention in your classroom as you reenact Moses' striking of the rock in Exodus 17. The people grumbled about water (again!) making this #3 on the Grumble Meter, but this time it was deadly serious for Moses whose life was threatened by his own people. Students learn that grumbling and complaining betrays our heart attitude and ultimately are grumbling against God.
✴️ LESSON PART D ~ COLOR CODING THE DEFEAT OF AMALEK
A hallmark of our Walking Alongside Jesus series is that students color code a passage in every lesson which trains them to see repeated words, phrases and important details that might be missed in a simple reading. In this lesson, your students color code Numbers 17:8-16 where the Israelites are attacked by Amalek, a direct descendant of Esau who therefore had a beef with the Israelite nation as they moved toward the Promised Land. Students dissect the passage to discover that Moses' hands played an important part in this story as he prayed behind the scenes and his partners who helped keep his hands lifted. Students are also introduced to Joshua who took on his very first (but certainly not last) battle against God's enemies. The prophecies against Amalek are noted since they become relevant in later Old Testament narratives.
✴️ LESSON PART E ~ ✝️ WHAT DID I LEARN ABOUT JESUS?
Psalm 78 provides historical commentary on the events in Exodus noting how the Israelites "sinned", "rebelled", "tested" and "demanded" (among many others not listed here!) while God was "compassionate", "restrained" and "remembered that the people were just flesh and bone". God did not, we are told in this psalm, "destroy them" or "stir up his wrath".
In fact, the story of Moses striking the rock was symbolic of Jesus being struck for our sins as related to us in 1 Corinthians 10:4 in which the apostle Paul states clearly that "the rock was Christ".

FAQS:
What Christian perspective is used for these Bible lessons?
I am an evangelical Christian who writes Bible curriculum for older students, and I take this tremendous responsibility seriously. Each lesson has a clear focus on what God says in His Word and the lessons are presented age appropriately, thoughtfully and biblically.
What translation of the Bible is used? 99% of the time I use the ESV although on rare occasion I might use another translation such as the NIV.
How can this Bible lesson be used?
Each lesson unit in our Walking Alongside Jesus series is divided into five sections, each section takes between 30 minutes to an hour. This allows homeschool and Christian school teachers to use it daily in the classroom (thereby completing an entire unit in a week) OR in a Sunday School classroom or youth group once a week (thereby completing an entire unit in a month). These lessons are flexible enough to be used in the following settings:
Children's Sunday School class
Youth Group
Private Christian school Bible class
Chapel for Christian schools
Children's Church
Homeschool Bible class
Family Bible time
