This engaging 3-5 hour curriculum unit is designed for older students in grades 4-8, and offers a deeper exploration of the well-known story. Students will trace Moses' life from a baby in a basket to his dramatic escape to Midian to his powerful encounter with God at the burning bush. Perfect for those students who are ready for a deeper dive, this lesson goes beyond the basics with interactive activities.

✍️ Students will use color-coded passages, practice map skills, follow a lily pad trail to uncover a baby in a basket, and gather around a simulated "burning" bush. This curriculum unit provides a hands-on, immersive learning experience that enhances understanding of Moses’ journey and the biblical narrative.

⏰️ Timing: This four to five hour lesson unit can be spread over several sessions, stopping and starting where you left off at the labeled sections. It is written so that it can be used daily in a home school or Christian school classroom for a week (or more!) OR once a week (such as in a Sunday School class) for an entire month.

✴️ Lesson Part A: Introduction ~ How Did We Get There From Here? Students are reminded that the Bible is one story and in order to understand the beginning of Exodus, we must go back to the end of Genesis in order to understand how the Israelites found themselves as slaves in Egypt. This is accomplished with a Genesis Family Tree which utilizes scripture "hints" and reminder pictures so that students can glue the appropriate pictures onto the family tree from Abraham all the way to Joseph.

✴️ Lesson Part B: Color Coding Exercise: Being able to see repeated words and themes in Scripture is an important skill that is taught in every lesson of our Walking Alongside Jesus curriculum series. This time students will color code Exodus 1:8-22 to locate the following themes present throughout this section:

✔️What the king feared

✔️How the king attempted to control the Israelites

✔️God "reversals"

✴️ Lesson Part C: Baby In a Basket: A paper or fabric river will run through your classroom boasting eight lily pads which will take your students through the familiar story of baby Moses in a basket but going much more in depth such as discussing the materials the basket was made from, the meaning of Moses' name and its relevance, what we know and don't know about Pharaoh's daughter, the names of Moses' parents and sister as outlined elsewhere in Scripture and much more!

✴️ Lesson Part D: The Burning Bush: Students learn map skills as they plot the major places mentioned in this section such as Egypt, Midian, and Mount Horeb. Then, their attention is called to six "oddities" about this bush that is burning as it speaks to Moses. Finally, students complete a worksheet "God's Goal Sheet" which reminds students that God knows, sees, hears and acts; God has good things in mind for his people and is faithful to his covenant; God is the I AM and that is all Moses needed to know in order to obey. Students then take this familiar narrative and with the guidance of a three page screenplay worksheet, plot and plan how they would write this play for younger students including "special effects", costuming, staging and then optionally, your class can perform the screenplay.

✴️ Lesson Part E: ✝️ What Did I Learn About Jesus As I Walked Alongside Him Today? The lesson begins with God's people in slavery (and seemingly without hope of their circumstances changes) and concludes with the understanding that just as God spoke to Moses at the burning bush as the great I AM (reflecting his eternal, unchanging and self-sufficient nature), Jesus used this same I AM statement seven times in the book of John and in so doing, identified Himself as God, giving US hope for our future in Heaven!
