Engage your 4th through 8th grade students with this dynamic Bible lesson that combines interactive activities, stunning visuals, colorful worksheets, and even taste testing—offering 3 to 5 hours of meaningful teaching time! The lesson begins with the Israelites’ escape from slavery in Egypt, as God leads them to the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea.

✍️ Older elementary and middle school students are ready to explore key biblical concepts such as redemption and deliverance and witness the power of God through the Song of Moses in Exodus 15. This lesson concludes with a foundational understanding: just as Moses delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, he is a foreshadowing of Jesus, our ultimate Deliverer who rescues us from a life of slavery to sin.

✝️This Christian education resource is perfect for private school and homeschool classrooms as well as Sunday School or youth group settings.

✴️ LESSON PART A ~ THE EXODUS

Map skills are taught in this section using a colorful worksheet that highlights the following relevant locations: Egypt, Nile River, Ramses, Succoth and the Red Sea. Then students glue strips of words on a Travel Sack (both included in the lesson) to indicate what the Israelites took with them as they fled Egypt. The lesson also guides you into a discussion of why the Israelites took with them dough without leavening and what these flat breads are called in different cultures (with optional taste-testing).

✴️ LESSON PART B ~ COLOR CODING THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD
A hallmark of our Walking Alongside Jesus series is that students color code a passage in every lesson which trains them to see repeated words, phrases and important details that might be missed in a simple reading. In this lesson, your students will color code Exodus 13:3-16, which describes the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Using the color coded worksheet, every occurrence of "the Lord" is underlined in red (12 times in just 14 verses!), what "the Lord" did or will do in purple, the phrase "strong hand" is underlined in blue, the feast requirements in green and the word "redeem" in brown. The discussion surrounding the words "redeem" and "leavening" is an important preparation for Lesson Part E which relates leavening to sin and our need for a Deliverer.

✴️ LESSON PART C ~ PILLARS OF CLOUD AND FIRE: CROSSING THE RED SEA

We provide a link to our YouTube channel on which is an instructional video on how to create a pillar of cloud that turns into a pillar of fire using a cardboard tube, batting and orange LED lights. This (optional) prop will definitely garner some attention in your classroom as you discuss what it meant for the Israelites to have God's presence with them, guiding them at each turn. Students then dig into Exodus 14 to locate information that will help them with the next activity: gathering around the "Red Sea" (a sheet) that has (paper) rock multiple choice questions from their worksheet ~ students run under the lifted sheet to forage for a rock and get out before the sheet is lowered. Prizes are on the line so competition can get heated!

✴️ LESSON PART D ~ THE SONG OF MOSES

Students will read Exodus 15 with an eye toward what it tells about the glory, power, majesty and character of God as the Israelites praise Him for their miraculous Red Sea crossing and their deliverance from the pursuing Egyptian army. They create a colorful GOD poster (included in the lesson) and then students have the opportunity to read some of these phrases of declaration while shaking a tambourine (as Miriam did in the Biblical narrative).

✴️ LESSON PART E ~ WHAT DID I LEARN ABOUT JESUS?

God brought the Israelite people to a place of desperation: trapped by the water ahead and hemmed in by the Egyptian army behind, their only choice was to look UP and realize that God, and only God was their Deliverer. The lesson draws parallels between the Israelites' journey and our own spiritual need for Jesus as the ultimate Deliverer: our situation is desperate when it comes to slavery to sin that here is no way out except to look UP to Jesus, our Deliverer.
