Through the use of a colorful "God's Law" booklet, students dig into each commandment through guided discussions, brainstorming sessions, and practical exercises such as creating doughnut analogies to illustrate each commandment. This approach aims to help students understand the importance of respecting authority ("honor your mother and father"), valuing life ("do not murder"), honoring marriage ("do not commit adultery"), maintaining honesty ("do not lie"), and fostering contentment ("do not covet"). The use of interactive activities and real-life examples seeks to make the commandments relevant and memorable for students.

This (optional) section includes an interactive activity where students categorize Old Testament laws by determining whether the punishment for each is a monetary fine or a life. Students are given nine real life, God-given scenarios from Exodus 21 and 22, and then use signs to indicate their guess as to the prescribed punishment. Through the use of the worksheet "God's Law: Uncovering the Patterns, this section concludes with noticing specific patterns in God's laws and the principles they reveal about His values, particularly the sanctity of human life, protection of the vulnerable, the importance of intentions, fitting punishments, and the role of proper authorities in administering justice.

A hallmark of our Walking Alongside Jesus series is that students color code a passage in every lesson which trains them to see repeated words, phrases and important details that might be missed in a simple reading. In this lesson, students color code Exodus 24:3-8 which details the the covenant between God and the Israelites who promised "All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do." Students use blue to underline the unified response of the people, green to highlight ceremonial details, and red to bracket where Moses placed blood during the ceremony (which was a foreshadowing of Christ's work on the cross).

Students work through the worksheet Ten Commandments: Backbone of God's Laws on which they can see that most Old Testament laws can be categorized into one of the ten core commandments. The lesson concludes with Jesus' summation of the ten commandments into two principles: love God and love people. Try as we might to do this perfectly, we simply cannot. But there is Someone who will never fail us, loves each one of us perfectly and is the ultimate good friend who "sticks closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24). Such a friend is He that He willingly gave up His life so that we could have eternal life. Jesus is a TRUE FRIEND!

FAQS:
What Christian perspective is used for these Bible lessons?
I am an evangelical Christian who writes Bible curriculum for older students, and I do not take this tremendous responsibility lightly. Each lesson has a clear focus on what God says in His Word and the lessons are presented age appropriately, thoughtfully and biblically.
What translation of the Bible is used? 99% of the time I use the ESV although on rare occasion I might use another translation such as the NIV.
How can this Bible lesson be used?
Each lesson unit in our Walking Alongside Jesus series is divided into five sections, each section takes between 30 minutes to an hour. This allows homeschool and Christian school teachers to use it daily in the classroom (thereby completing an entire unit in a week) OR in a Sunday School classroom or youth group once a week (thereby completing an entire unit in a month).
