This engaging, hands-on curriculum unit on the story of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4, guides your older students into the practical aspects of giving to God and more importantly, the heart attitude behind it. This important Old Testament lesson highlights Abel's faithful offering and how it foreshadowed Jesus, the Mediator of a new covenant, as described in Hebrews 12:24.
Color Coding Genesis 4 ✍️
Students' color code Genesis 4 and explore the actions, thoughts, motivations, and dialogue between Cain and Abel. The accompanying worksheet, "The Mark of Cain," invites students to imagine the protective mark given to Cain and then draw its possible placement on his body.
Crouching Penny Game
This very practical game illustrates the concept of sin and the need to rule over it. The key verse is God’s warning to Cain in Genesis 4:7 ~ “Sin is crouching at the door. You must rule over it.” Each part of this game board represents an element of the story of Cain, and ultimately us as humans who also struggle with ruling over the sin that crouches at our door:
◽️The DOOR represents the HEART ♥️
◽️The PENNIES represent the SACRIFICES we offer to God. ⬆️
◽️The PATHS are the LIFE CHOICES we make along the way. ⛔️
◽️The TRIANGLE CORNERS are where we OFFER our SACRIFICES to God. ↗️
Students must crouch and swerve to avoid incoming game cards wadded up as "rocks" thrown at them by the teacher. The twist at the end of the game has students asking themselves if they intentionally kept the shiniest of pennies on their game board for themselves rather than giving them up as offerings.
✝️ What Have I Learned about Jesus Today?
At the end of this lesson (and every lesson in this series), we invite students to ponder the thought-provoking question: "What have you learned about JESUS today?" After exploring Abel's faithfulness as described in Hebrews 11, students are given a careful explanation of the old covenant and the new covenant and how Jesus as the mediator of the new covenant offered Himself up as the Perfect Sacrifice on the cross of Calvary. This is the reason Jesus’ innocent blood speaks “a better word” than Abel’s.
