Take your students on a journey through Genesis 28 through 31 as they explore Jacob’s middle years: his dramatic flight from Esau, Jacob's dream of a staircase to Heaven, and the six promises God made to him. This four-part Bible lesson provides unique learning experiences, including a colorful "Jacob's Ladder" floor to ceiling visual to help students grasp the powerful truth that Jesus is our Bridge - the only way to Heaven!

Lesson Highlights & Activities:

Reviewing Jacob’s Three “Grabs” – Students are reminded about Jacob’s history of grasping his brother Esau’s heel, birthright, and blessing.

Color Coding: Jacob on the Run – Students analyze Genesis 27:41 - 28:14 by color coding key dialogue and emotional phrases in the text which helps them understand Jacob’s fear and ultimately God’s assurances. ⭐️

Jacob’s Staircase to Heaven – Using an eye-catching "Staircase to Heaven" display (instructions and video link provided) and an associated worksheet, students identify the six promises God made to Jacob as well as Jacob’s conditional "IF/THEN" response.

Jacob Marries Leah & Rachel – Through a map activity and the "Jacob Deceived" worksheet, students uncover how Jacob, the deceiver, is deceived by his Uncle Laban—a pivotal moment in his story. ✅️

Jesus: The Only Bridge to Heaven – You will take your students to a nearby stairwell to illustrate the truth that we cannot expect to go to Heaven because our parents or grandparents are saved ~ we must all come to God on our own. This is illustrated by an interactive activity where a student rides on the back of an adult helper up the stairs to illustrate how Jesus carries us to Heaven, bridging the gap between us and God.

▪️Colorful twenty page step-by-step lesson plans with easy DO/SAY/READ instructions

▪️Color Coding Jacob on the Run (worksheet and answer key)

❓️FAQS❓️

What Christian perspective is used for these Bible lessons?

I am an evangelical Christian who writes Bible curriculum for older students, and I take this tremendous responsibility seriously. Each lesson has a clear focus on what God says in His Word and the lessons are presented age appropriately, thoughtfully and biblically.

What translation of the Bible is used? 99% of the time I use the ESV although on rare occasion I might use another translation such as the NIV.

How can this Bible lesson be used

Each lesson unit in our Walking Alongside Jesus series is divided into five sections, each section takes between 30 minutes to an hour. This allows homeschool and Christian school teachers to use it daily in the classroom (thereby completing an entire unit in a week) OR in a Sunday School classroom or youth group once a week (thereby completing an entire unit in a month). These lessons are flexible enough to be used in the following settings:

  • Children's Sunday School class

  • Youth Group

  • Private Christian school Bible class

  • Chapel for Christian schools

  • Children's Church

  • Homeschool Bible class

  • Family Bible time
