❇️ Your students will long remember the activities and important life lessons from the book of Judges in this hands-on curriculum for students in grades 4-8.
The three lessons in this unit begin and end with a timeless verse found in Judges 21:25: “In those days, there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
❇️ This verse launches your class into a discussion about the cycle of SIN ~ OPPRESSION ~ DELIVERANCE, a pattern that is seen clearly in the stories of the twelve judges.
✴️ Sin: Disobedience to God's commands: In the book of Judges everyone did what they wanted with no regard to God
✴️ Oppression: Consequences of turning away from God: God allowed foreign kings to come into the land of Israel, either forcing the people into slavery or taking their valuables and food.
✴️ Deliverance: God's compassionate response to cries for help and repentance: The Israelites cried out to God and confessed their sin, asking for help in defeating their enemies. God in His loving-kindness sent a judge to deliver them, often quite miraculously.
✍️ Students will delve into these three elements of the cycle through focused study of Othniel (where it is most succinct) and other judges as you have time. Relevant portions of the book of Judges are included on the worksheet “12 Judges Highlighting Activity” to make this easy to accomplish.
✍️ Students will participate in an engaging "Judge the Correct Judge" Card Game, using their own set of colorful Judges Cards. The game encourages fast decision-making, mirroring the cycle of “Sin ~ Oppression ~ Deliverance” which reinforces the lesson.
❇️This curriculum aims to emphasize the human condition and the cycle's relevance in our lives. We all want our own way, everyone sins. But God loves us too much to allow us to continue in sin. He gives clear warnings but if we continue, there is likely to be a consequence, which is the “oppression” part of the cycle. God’s purpose in this is always reconciliation, because He wants a relationship with each one of us.
✝️ It concludes by highlighting God's purpose of reconciliation and the role of Jesus Christ as the ultimate Judge and Deliverer, offering salvation and a lasting relationship.
✴️Fair warning!✴️Leading your students through the book of Judges is not for the faint of heart. Subjects in this book include blood, massacres, death, human sacrifice, womanizing, revenge, prostitution, and virginity just to name a few. This lesson purposely steers clear of “certain” verses that touch on these subjects, but sometimes it is unavoidable in order to maintain the integrity of the story line. Please read through the lesson carefully and feel free to skip stories or sections that are outside the maturity level of your students.
