Creating Your Own Bible Scroll: A Fun Craft for Engaging Bible Lessons
Have you ever thought about how many stories in the Bible involve a scroll? From Jeremiah and his scribe Baruch to the seven seals in Revelation, scrolls have a significant place in biblical history. As a Bible teacher, having a scroll on hand can instantly capture your students' attention and enhance the storytelling experience. Let’s dive into how you can create your own impressive scroll using simple materials!
The easiest and most affordable method I've found is using curtain rods. You can often find these at garage sales or thrift stores, so there's no need to buy them new. Curtain rods are great because you can adjust them to your desired length by taping them together or cutting them down. Plus, the finials on the ends add an elegant touch that makes your scroll look truly authentic.
Before you commit to a rod length, you’ll want to choose your paper. There are fantastic options available, like lifelike parchment scroll paper or even rolls of brown craft paper that can be 100 feet long or more. If you want your scroll to stand the test of time, consider investing in non-tear scroll paper. You can find this at Christian church supply and VBS sites, and trust me, it's worth it; I have a scroll that’s over 20 years old and still looks brand new!
Now, when it comes to how to handle the scroll, it’s important to note that biblical scrolls were read from right to left and rolled with the left hand—just like flipping through the pages of a book. If you only have one rod, you can glue or tape a dowel at the other end to help roll the paper as you read. This adds a nice touch of realism to your presentation.
Remember, props are always better than just plain paper. They bring a story to life and help your students engage more deeply with the lesson.
